When was the last time you’ve been in a situation that rubbed you the wrong way? Something you just could not get your head wrapped around… until you did? This process of disruption and resolution always reminds me of homeostasis – that state of balance; moving out of and into it.
When something rubs you the wrong way, it’s a good sign you are learning. Our normal system is agitated when something unfamiliar occurs. We then seek that balance again, that we find enjoyable. Our body, our mind, they want to figure it out.
Think of it as a disruption of operations. It stops the usual process and requires changes, so that once everything is fixed and remodeled operations can run smoother than ever before.
Homeostasis is described as a system that has a constant level of births and deaths. In trainings, seminars and at retreats we tend to experience a phase of frustration because we are learning all these new things, but are unable to integrate them properly. Too many new thoughts are born and too few convictions die. With time, as we let go of what we thought we knew, we integrate the new knowledge and establish the natural balance again. The process may be painful, but the result is divine.
Every now and then expose yourself to things that make you uncomfortable. Push those boundaries physically and mentally. Don’t reject the confusion and frustration but bear with it to find the balance again. It’s uncomfortable, before it’s a pleasure. Yet, as a result, you grow and you learn. That’s what makes this process worthwhile.
